The FDA says it has approved Propecia to treat male pattern baldness in men. The drug works by blocking an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase, which converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, which is a form of male hormone. It’s also used to treat other diseases that have caused hair loss.
According to the agency, “Propecia, approved by the FDA for treatment of male pattern hair loss, has been shown to be effective in treating hair loss in men, and has been approved for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a type of enlarged prostate.”
The FDA also has approved the drug for treating androgenetic alopecia (male pattern hair loss) in men. This treatment is considered safe, but it’s also a bit expensive.
In the U. S., Propecia costs about $1,600 per month.

“The study’s results are important in the context of the FDA’s continued efforts to provide a better understanding of the potential risks of using Propecia and in the treatment of male pattern hair loss,” said Dr. Michael Merck.
